Historic record in the port of Santander with the best first quarter in its history The almost 1.7 million tons operated by the port of Santander between January and March represent an increase of 100 thousand tons compared to the second best figure, recorded in 2022. The president of the Port Authority, Francisco Martín, has assured that "we are facing a very positive trend" that will be consolidated thanks to the container traffic of the new Boluda Shipping Terminal. Santander 12-04-23. With 1,688 thousand tons, this first quarter of the year has been the best in the history of the port, surpassing the 1,587 reached in 2022 and the 1,574 of 2021. Although the three main groups of goods - solid bulk, liquid bulk and general cargo - have performed well during this first quarter, the movement of solids has been especially noteworthy, recording its third best figure for this period with 965 thousand tons, compared to 1,055 thousand tons in the first quarter of 2005 and 1,128 thousand tons in 2002. For the president of the Port Authority, Francisco Martín, these figures show that the port "has been able to successfully diversify its traffic", since "in those years" it moved mainly clinker -nowadays disappeared- and coal "whose reduction has been more than considerable". Martin stressed that this result shows a "very positive" upward trend that has been sustained over time and will receive "a strong boost" thanks to the container traffic of the new terminal of Boluda Shipping that "will be responsible for the increase in traffic moved by the Port, in the first instance, in a million tons". As for the traffic of March, this stands at 628 thousand tons, representing an increase of 33.5% over the same month of 2022, when 470,756 thousand tons were obtained. Of the total traffic recorded this period, 369 thousand tons have been of solid bulks, 21 thousand of liquid bulks and 237 thousand of general cargo. In this first quarter of the year, the increase in automobiles and cereals is particularly noteworthy. With respect to the percentage of each traffic, liquids represent 3.8% of total goods, while solid bulks reach 57.1% and general cargo 39.1%.
