The renovation of the Cabo Mayor lighthouse, work of the architects Ignacio Pereda, César Barrio and Elena Valenzuela, is an important contribution to the architectural heritage of Santander. Respecting the quality of the buildings, the following factors are taken into account:

- The restoration of the lighthouse to its original condition as a free-standing tower in order to reinforce its value as a coastal landmark.

- The compatibility of the function of the lighthouse as a navigational aid with its new cultural function, by creating two levels in the octagonal tambour; the lower to be used as a showroom and the upper to house the signalling equipment.

- Conversion of the living quarters into exhibit rooms, reached by a cylindrical tower and the creation of terraces/balconies at varying levels giving easy access.

- The creation of a “garden of art” in the exterior.
