Educational justification

The activity involving sea products is rounded off by a visit to the fishmongers. We believe that this activity can be suitably carried out from the perspective of the consumer: as a person who buys fish and, subsequently, eats the product. We have therefore completed the process a product (such as fish) goes through, from it being caught to it being sold, passing through the different middle-men on the way. The basic criteria for explaining this process are simplicity and straightforwardness, which allow the students to understand the whole procedure without the need for going into too much detail.

Knowledge of the surrounding area, Spanish language, Art, Consumer Education.

Description of the work to be undertaken:

How?: The activity in this file is fun and involves identifying the route the boat must take to be able to catch the fish.

Where?: In the classroom.

When?: After the visit.

Using what?: Student file, paper, pen or pencil.

Assessment: For the teacher to decide.

We suggest doing this file once the visit to the fishmongers has taken place. The observation work and information gathering started at the fish market will be completed during this visit and relate to the activity in file 2. Once the information has been collected, a price comparison can be made between the cost of different products and conclusions can be drawn. This activity will be managed by the teacher. Note: the teacher will have to weigh up whether it is suitable for the whole class to go on this visit or not, whether this is done in groups or on an individual basis.

  • If the whole class visits the fishmongers, the advantage is that the teacher can direct the observation work towards the aspects that interest him/her, but the disadvantage is the complication of going with a large group of students and the fact that this could upset customers.
  • If the teacher decides to take small groups on the visit, this means that work will be duplicated, but that the observation work will be more productive and it will be easier to manage the groups. Groups of students could also visit the fishmongers without the teacher, but obviously they would not know what to do and the visit would not be as productive as we would like.
  • Finally, if the students visit the fishmongers on an individual basis, they could go with their dad, mum or both. This would encourage the students' parents to become interested in their son's or daughter's activities and the students will be motivated to complete the work well, accompanied by at least one adult. There is always the risk that the parents do not go with their son/daughter on this activity for whatever reason, meaning that the student is not able to carry out the activity correctly.

Whatever the decision, the teacher needs to set out some clear and simple guidelines for the observation work and these should be given in writing to all the students so that they understand the reason for the activity and how it needs to be undertaken, etc. The file begins with a short explanation and definitions of the different stages of preservation applicable to fish and the identification of these stages using the drawing on page 19. To complement these activities, it could also be interesting to do something practical, such as ask the students to bring fish preserved in different ways into class (tinned, salted, fresh, frozen, smoked, etc,). From here, many conclusions can be drawn. We should always link the "how" and the "why" and we should consider the advantages of each option.

Where?: In the fishmongers and in the classroom.

When?: The most suitable time is after the visit to the fishing port, where the students will have seen the fish.

Using what?: The activities in this file.

Assessment: For the teacher to decide.

Activity objectives:

To familiarise the students with the daily life and activity of small businesses: the fishmongers.

To make the students aware of their role as consumers in the making and their rights when consuming a product.
