Sea products... Can you identify them?

Educational justification:

The activities proposed in this file and in the following files aim to provide some signposts as to where this work with students can lead, although as these signposts are pretty vague, the teacher is able to exploit this section in different ways.

In the observation table on page 6, we have only given the names of six products (Sardine, Hake, Red Mullet, Prawn, Monkfish and Scabbardfish), as students will almost certainly be able to find these fish during their visit to the fish market. Students can note down other products that they see in the other boxes.

If appropriate, the teacher can ask students to research these species or others. In the final report, they could present the most common characteristics of these species, how they reproduce, photos of their habitat, etc. As they are in the second stage of primary education, this research does not need to be detailed or complicated. It is a good opportunity however to encourage students to be organised, to plan their work, to share out tasks in the group, to critically analyse the material collected, etc. In order to carry out a good job, it is essential to motivate the students and to monitor the whole process. If possible, it would be good if the teacher could provide colour, life size photos of these animals, so that the students find it easier to identify them. It is also a good idea to bear in mind the fishing calendar, so that the students can see the chosen species at the fish stalls. The best way to do this is to base the activity on the products being sold at the fish market during the visit, telling the students in advance to take note also. The teacher should also use reference books in the school classroom or library and/or provide the students with the bibliography required for this piece of work.

Description of the work to be undertaken:

How?: This piece of work is carried out in the fish market. Students can see samples of the fish and can fill out the information in the corresponding table. This information will be completed at a later date with a visit to the fishmongers (a description of this other activity relates to file 9 referring to the sale and distribution of the product). It would be a good idea to check that all students have all the correct information. This information can be used by the teacher when thinking up maths problems and exercises, etc. The information can also be used to research certain species set out in the point titled Educational Justification.

Where?: At the fish market and in the classroom. Teacher.

When?: During and after the visit.

Other information?: We recommend that the teacher considers the possibility of visiting the Maritime Museum (free entry).

Complementary material: We recommend that there are some encyclopaedias, dictionaries, etc. in the classroom, so that students can refer to them when completing their research on some of the species. We'd like to highlight the guides developed by the Maritime Museum, which are very good and can be bought in the museum at a very reasonable price.
