The fishermen

Educational justification

As we have explained in other files in this guide, we think that it is essential for the students to know and be aware of the fact that activities are carried out by people and that people are important in the undertaking of all kinds of activities. For this reason, we think it is essential for the students to have direct contact with situations outside their own context, which can be very personally enriching for them.

Piece of work linked to the following stage areas:

Knowledge of the surrounding area and Spanish language.

Description of the work to be undertaken:

How?: The activities suggested in this file include an interview with one of the many fishermen at the port. It is important to explain to the students that these people are working there and that we should disturb them as little as possible. For this reason, the students should try and speak, very politely, to those people who are willing to be interviewed. This activity always depends on whether there are fishermen present and whether they are willing to answer the students' questions or not. Afterwards, ask the students to summarise the answers the fishermen have given them. Finally, we once again suggest a word game: linked poetry that has to be connected to the life of a fisherman.

Where?: At the fishing port and in the classroom.

When?: Before, during and after the visit.

Using what?: The relevant file.

Assessment: For the teacher to decide.

Complementary material: The majority of the material we have found about the life of fishermen is literary and predominately poetry. There are some good books, but they are far too detailed to be used with children.

Activity objectives:

To introduce other contexts to the students that are different from their own experience.

To emphasise the human factor in all activities (the fishing world in this case) and in the right context (the fishing port) in order to encourage students to humanise their environment.

To encourage the students to discover how important people are and the functions that people carry out so that society runs smoothly.
