Fishing facilities at the Port of Santander

Educational justification

A wide range and variety of human activities take place at the Port of Santander. It is a good idea to make the students see that this activity is organised, tries to meet specific needs and has a special terminology.

We should help the students to discover the importance of the port area and the people that live and work there. From the port itself, we can encourage the students to think creatively about the environment and the most likely activities that take place.

It is good for the students to think about and discover the wide range of resources, people and infrastructures, etc. that exist at the port.

Piece of work linked to the following stage areas:

Knowledge of the surrounding area, Spanish language and Art.

Description of the work to be undertaken:

How?: This activity has two parts; firstly, we recommend that you carefully read page 2, stopping at terms that are new and which the students don't know (the vocabulary can be found in file 20 of the same chapter). Once the words have been explained and the students understand the activities that take place at the port, we move on to page 3, where the students should stick the names of the main fishing facilities and services in the correct places (sticker sheet).

Where?: In the classroom and on the visit to the Port of Santander.

When?: Before and during the visit.

Using what?: The relevant file, the stickers and possibly a map of the port.

Assessment: For the teacher to decide.

Activity objectives:

To introduce the students to the terminology needed to name the fishing port's facilities and areas, as well as the activities and operations that are carried out there.

To teach the students the main activities undertaken at the fishing port.

To enable the students to locate the most important fishing services in relation to port activity on the Maliaño dock.
