Panoramic view of the Port
The fishermen... how do they fish and with what?
Educational justification
This file deals with fishing tackle. It is important for the students to be familiar with basic fishing equipment, as the work of fishermen depends on these tools (see previous file).
Piece of work linked to the following stage areas:
Knowledge of the surrounding area, Art, Consumer Education and Environmental Education.
Description of the work to be undertaken:
How?: In this file, we aim to introduce the most common ways of fishing: rod fishing, net fishing and within net fishing, fixed nets and drift nets. Using three drawings, we firstly ask the students to identify which is which. After this, using the definitions for rod fishing and net fishing, we ask them to define, in their own words, what they think are fixed nets and drift nets.
The activities in the file can be expanded on with other related activities, such as with art (making a net with rope), physical education (games that include fishing objects from the floor), etc.
Where?: The fishing port and in the classroom.
When?: During and after the visit. If the teacher thinks it is appropriate, this activity can be done before the visit.
Using what?: The relevant activities.
Assessment: For the teacher to decide.
Complementary material: If you want to go into more depth on the topic of fishing, we recommend "The encyclopaedia of the sea" published by Planeta.
Activity objectives:
To link the fishing equipment and tackle with their correct names.
To enable the students to correctly define concepts using more general definitions.
