Sea products... Fishing boat

Educational justification:

Having introduced the products we find in the sea, we now go into more detail about who goes fishing, how they do it and what they use. We have divided this topic up into three sections:

  • The fishermen and their environment
  • The boat and fishing tackle
  • Fishing techniques

This file relates to point B; the following files to points A and C respectively. We feel that it is important and also fun for the students to find out about boats, the main parts, what tools they have, etc. We think this is important because the students are used to seeing boats on the television, in films or perhaps at the port, but this knowledge is artificial and fairly superficial. It is essential for teachers to help students compare what they see on the television and in books, etc, with reality.

Piece of work linked to the following stage areas:

Knowledge of the surrounding area, Spanish language and Art.

Description of the work to be undertaken:

How?: The work in this file involves placing the relevant numbers from the drawing next to the terms at the bottom.

We've used a fishing boat as the example, but other types of boat can also be used. The students could also do some research on the types of boat there are and what each one is used for, etc.

Where?: During the visit, you will probably have the chance to see a boat being repaired at the dry dock. Using the explanations given by the guide, the students can complete file 4. The activity can continue in the classroom.

When?: During the visit and in the classroom.

Using what?: The activity on pages 8 and 9.

Assessment: For the teacher to decide.

Complementary material: We suggest using models of boats for the explanations.

Activity objectives:

To introduce the students to the main tools used by fishermen to do their work: the boat.

To make students aware of the correct terminology to name the most important parts of the boat.
