Educational justification

We hope that this activity helps the students to understand that technological developments that are very beneficial to mans' wellbeing, also bring with them, to a greater or lesser extent, the deterioration of this environment that is so valued in terms of survival and, therefore, human life. The aim is to make the students see that we are not just talking about something far-off (the increased desertification of many countries, indiscriminate felling in the Amazon, etc.), nor something outside their understanding or something that they are not responsible for (the destruction of mountains to build large roads, the construction of housing developments on the coast and in areas that have a significant environmental impact, etc.), rather that we are talking about environmental disasters that, on a small scale, we cause when we throw things into the sea, when we drop rubbish or other things on the floor, when we use more paper than we need to, when we don't recycle paper, etc. Although we have designed an activity relating to how we should protect the bay, the activity can also be extended to include all the previously mentioned issues.

Piece of work linked to the following stage areas:

Knowledge of the surrounding area, Spanish language, Art, Consumer Education and Environmental Education.

Description of the work to be undertaken:

How?: The activity suggested in this file involves decoding a pictorial message. Once the message has been decoded, the students should get into groups managed by the teacher in order to think about what each of us can do to solve, or at least, reduce the huge problem of pollution. The important thing about this activity is to involve the students in the problem, making them see that at some point in their lives, they may also pollute the environment. For example: it is not good enough for a student to say that they've only dropped rubbish once. We need to make the students see that if we added together all the rubbish we've ever dropped, we'd see that we really contribute quite a lot to the pollution of the planet.

Where?: In the classroom.

When?: After the visit.

Using what ?: With the relevant file.

Assessment: For the teacher to decide.

Activity objectives:

To enable the students to critically identify cases of pollution in the surrounding area that damage the natural environment.

To enable the students to become aware of situations where they themselves may pollute their environment.

To stimulate the students to develop the required attitude to help and protect the natural environment that surrounds them.
