Welcome to the Aula del Mar, Rector Jordá, an educational initiative backed by the University of Cantabria, the Menéndez Pelayo International University and the Santander Port Authority, whose profile and areas of action are restricted to a framework of specific action: the sea, element deeply rooted in the material, social and spiritual essence of all civilizations. Constant source of wealth and basic channel of progress, the exploitation of its resources,its use as a physical means of communication and the transfer of people, goods and knowledge, as well as activities that have directly or indirectly generated these functions, have throughout history, enabled not only the economic development and flourishing of societies and technical and scientific advances, but they have also contributed to inspire and encourage artistic and cultural creation,hence forging the identity of communities and countries.

Therefore, the sea is a recurring and transversal theme that, in addition to feeding artistic inspiration, philosophical reflection or or scientific research, acts as a powerful communicating vessel between the different areas of knowledge and disciplines into which human know how is organized: oceanography, engineering, economy, law, physics, chemistry, geography, architecture, music, literature, fine arts, etc., generating a rich and extensive heritage in them all.
